    Failure to detect changes in color for lines rotating in depth: the effects of grouping and type of color change

    AbstractA new technique for measuring change detection was introduced in which contours rotating in depth around a vertical axis (in a computer display) could be altered in color as they passed through their point of minimum extension (the median plane) where a thin static vertical occluder hid the change. Sets of five or six contours were either strongly grouped (similar in length, orientation and spacing) or weakly grouped (of variable length, orientation and spacing). Changes consisted of one line changing to a new color or else two lines swapping colors. The measure was the proportion of missed changes. When subjects were not instructed to look for change almost no changes were reported although subjects were told beforehand that they would have to describe the configuration after viewing it. When subjects were instructed to look for changes, it was found that detection of color change was significantly better for strongly grouped lines. It is proposed that grouping, by reducing redundancy, also reduces attentional demands with respect to the properties on which it is based, making it easier to attend to and therefore detect changes in other properties. We found that it was much easier to detect the introduction of a new color than to detect a swap between two existing colors. It is hypothesized that swap-type changes were harder to detect because they required attention to a conjunction of position and color

    Humor Works: Communication Style and Humor Functions in Manager/Subordinate Relationships

    This study explored humor production and communicator style within the dyadic communicative relationship between organizational managers and subordinates. Research questions considered positive, expressive, and negative humor functions and manager-subordinate relational style, communication style, sex, and dyad characteristics. Results indicated that both organizational managers and subordinates report using conversational humor, mostly positive and expressive humor. Results also indicate communicator image, dominant or affiliative communication style, and sex are related to the type of conversational humor initiated by organizational managers and subordinates. It appears that organizational power/dominance and sex are better predictors of humor usage than other characteristics. Overall, results suggest that relational factors, such as one\u27s humor, may be important to the enactment of organizational citizenship behaviors among subordinates

    Clues to the Formation of Liller 1 from Modeling Its Complex Star Formation History

    Liller 1 and Terzan 5 are two massive systems in the Milky Way bulge hosting populations characterized by significantly different ages (Delta t > 7-8 Gyr) and metallicities (Delta[Fe/H] similar to 1 dex). Their origin is still strongly debated in the literature and all formation scenarios proposed so far require some level of fine-tuning. The detailed star formation histories of these systems may represent an important piece of information to assess their origin. Here we present the first attempt to perform such an analysis for Liller 1. The first key result we find is that Liller 1 has been forming stars over its entire lifetime. More specifically, three broad star formation episodes are clearly detected: (1) a dominant one, occurring some 12-13 Gyr ago with a tail extending for up to similar to 3 Gyr; (2) an intermediate burst, between 6 and 9 Gyr ago; and (3) a recent one, occurring between 1 and 3 Gyr ago. The old population contributes to about 70% of the total stellar mass, and the remaining fraction is almost equally split between the intermediate and young populations. If we take these results at face value, they would suggest that this system unlikely formed through the merger between an old globular cluster and a giant molecular cloud, as recently proposed. On the contrary, our findings provide further support to the idea that Liller 1 is the surviving relic of a massive primordial structure that contributed to the Galactic bulge formation, similarly to the giant clumps observed in star-forming high-redshift galaxies

    Patient and provider‐level barriers to hepatitis C screening and linkage to care: A mixed‐methods evaluation

    Achieving practice change can be challenging when guidelines shift from a selective risk‐based strategy to a broader population health strategy, as occurred for hepatitis C (HCV) screening (2012‐2013). We aimed to evaluate patient and provider barriers that contributed to suboptimal HCV screening and linkage‐to‐care rates after implementation of an intervention to improve HCV screening and linkage‐to‐care processes in a large, public integrated healthcare system following the guidelines change. As part of a mixed‐methods study, we collected data through patient surveys (n = 159), focus groups (n = 9) and structured observation of providers and staff (n = 9). We used these findings to then inform domains for the second phase, which consisted of semi‐structured interviews with patients across the screening‐treatment continuum (n = 24) and providers and staff at primary care and hepatology clinics (n = 21). We transcribed and thematically analysed interviews using an integrated inductive and deductive framework. We identified lack of clarity about treatment cost, treatment complications and likelihood of cure as ongoing patient‐level barriers to screening and linkage to care. Provider‐level barriers included scepticism about establishing HCV screening as a quality metric given competing clinical priorities, particularly for patients with multiple comorbidities. However, most felt positively about adding HCV as a quality metric to enhance HCV screening and linkage to care. Provider engagement yielded suggestions for process improvements that resulted in increased stakeholder buy‐in and real‐time enhancements to the HCV screening process intervention. Systematic data collection at baseline and during practice change implementation may facilitate adoption and adaptation to improve HCV screening guideline implementation.     UV Properties of Galactic Globular Clusters with GALEX I. The Color-Magnitude Diagrams

    We present GALEX data for 44 Galactic globular clusters obtained during 3 GALEX observing cycles between 2004 and 2008. This is the largest homogeneous data set on the UV photometric properties of Galactic globular clusters ever collected. The sample selection and photometric analysis are discussed, and color-magnitude diagrams are presented. The blue and intermediate-blue horizontal branch is the dominant feature of the UV color-magnitude diagrams of old Galactic globular clusters. Our sample is large enough to display the remarkable variety of horizontal branch shapes found in old stellar populations. Other stellar types that are obviously detected are blue stragglers and post core-He burning stars. The main features of UV color-magnitude diagrams of Galactic globular clusters are briefly discussed. We establish the locus of post-core He burning stars in the UV color-magnitude diagram and present a catalog of candidate AGB-manqu \'e, post early-AGB, and post-AGB stars within our cluster sample.Comment: Accepted for publication by The Astronomical Journal. 46 pages, including 21 Figures and 3 tables.
